WHEAT UPDATE: Choosing the Best Wheat for Your Area
AGSouth Genetics offers multiple varieties of AGS Wheat which are grown IN the South FOR the South.
The characteristics in our wheat product line are locally adapted to ensure you reach the highest yields for YOUR AREA. Below is a great example to show how the correctly selected variety & planting date play a huge role in the productivity of your crop.
(Left) AGS 2038, perfect wheat for South Georgia – medium/late maturity, planted with enough time to get in the appropriate cold hours – as you can see it way outperformed the alternative, which is not particularly suited for the Southeast, nor was planted on time.
Another big factor that plays into wheat yields is “when to plant” and some varieties need to be planted earlier depending on location. For example, in Tifton GA, AGS 3040 needs to be planted between Nov 10-15th, where AGS 3015 may not need to be planted until Dec 10-15th and based on the maturity of each variety, you would actually end up harvesting AGS 3015 10-15 days before you harvest the 3040. It may not seem right, but knowing what we know, AGS 3015 is a very early wheat and AGS 3040 is a medium/late wheat so that’s just the way the wheat grows.
We know there are many factors to consider when choosing the appropriate variety for your area, so we are here to help! Give one of our wheat experts a call to determine what variety (and when) to plant to receive your highest harvest year yet!
