 What is Prevented Planting? 

Prevented Planting applies when widespread weather prevents planting an insured crop by the final planting date. Prevent Plant payments help recover pre‑plant costs and allow acres to remain idle or be planted to cover crops without insurance penalty. 

 Prevent Plant + Cover Crop Rules (Current RMA Policy) 

 * The List below should be verified through your appropriate crop insurance agency. * 

‑ Summer cover crops are allowed on Prevent Plant acres 

‑ Cover crops are not considered a second crop. 

‑ Grazing, haying, or chopping is allowed with 100% Prevent Plant payment retained 

Recommended Summer Cover Crop Species 

 Grasses: Pearl millet, foxtail millet, brown top millet, sorghum‑sudangrass — weed suppression and soil cover 

Legumes: Cowpeas, sunn hemp, annual lespedeza — nitrogen fixation and soil biology

Summer Covers vs Herbicide-Only (No Cover) 

No cover + herbicide: Bare soil, higher Palmer pressure, multiple rescue sprays, erosion risk. 

Summer cover crops: Covered soil, suppressed weeds, fewer sprays, cleaner fall planting.
